MIHINTALE

Buddhism was said to have been brought to sri Lanka on a Poson Poya Day and Mihintale was where it all began.

The Mihintale rock which is over 1008 feet high is situated about 13 kilometers east of Anuradhapura. The historic meeting between King Devanampiyatissa and Arahat Mahinda, the son of Emperor Asoka was India was said to have taken place in 247BC near this rock. As the result of this meeting the king converted to Buddhism ann there was the esteblishment and the growth of Buddhism in Sri lanka.

The monks' refectory or the dining room and the relic house is on the second landing in the stairs. Here one will find two stone slabs which are known as the Mihintale tablets. They are inscribed with rules laid down for the monks and the servants of the monastery. These slabs are thought to have been erected during king Mahinda's rule.

One can see Mahinda's cave , where Arahath Mahinda was said to lived and a large flat stone where he had rested until he died in 200 BC.
